Health and Safety Training Courses Available for Licensed Child Care Providers!

The initial health and safety training series for licensed child care providers has been updated to include four shorter courses (trainings), with the topics that are required prior to working with children all included in the new Health & Safety for Licensed Child Care Providers, Module A. The new courses are hosted in Michigan Virtual’s online professional learning portal and are being offered for FREE.

Navigating to the Initial Health and Safety Training Series for Licensed Child Care Providers
Description of Courses

Health & Safety for Licensed Child Care Providers, Module A (2 hours):

  • Prevention and Control of Infectious Disease (including Immunizations)
  • Recognition and Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect
  • Prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome and Abusive Head Trauma

Health & Safety for Licensed Child Care Providers, Module B (3 hours):

  • Child Development- Infant, Toddler, Preschooler, and School-age
  • Administration of Medication
  • Prevention of and Response to Emergencies due to Food and Allergic Reactions
  • Handling and Storage of Hazardous Materials and Appropriate Disposal of Bio-contaminants

Health & Safety for Licensed Child Care Providers, Module C (2 hours):

  • Infant, Child and Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid
  • Building and Physical Premises Safety (including Playground Safety)
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response Training

Transportation Training for Licensed Child Care Providers (1 hour)

Infant Safe Sleep for Michigan Child Care Providers (course developed by MDHHS and LARA; 1 hour)

Q1: How much do the online trainings cost?
We have current funding that will allow for these courses to be offered for FREE.


Q2: Where can I find the online trainings?

Infant Safe Sleep for Michigan Child Care Providers (course developed by MDHHS and LARA) is still hosted in the original learning management system. To register for this course, visit the MiRegistry Statewide Training Calendar, type “Infant Safe Sleep for Michigan Child Care Providers” in the Course Title box, and click “Search”.

Q3: How will I document completion of these online trainings?
Evidence of completion will be recorded and stored on an individual’s learning record in MiRegistry. Child Care Licensing has access to MiRegistry to review completion.

Q4: Do the online Health and Safety courses include the required Pediatric First Aid and CPR?
Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification is not included in the online modules.  Module C does include basic training on Pediatric First Aid and CPR. Pediatric First Aid and CPR courses can also be found on the Statewide Training Calendar.

Q5:  How many training hours are the online courses?

Q6:  Does a licensed child care provider have to take the online training to meet the new training requirements?
No, a licensed child care provider may seek alternative training to meet the requirements. Health and Safety and Child Development training is available from a variety of sources. At the state level, we are offering high quality, best practice training in an accessible format.

If alternative training is taken, a provider may submit evidence to MiRegistry.

Q7: If I have completed the original Course 1 and Course 2, do I need to take the new series?

No.  If you have already completed training on the required initial health and safety topics, you do not need to take the new series.
